COUNSELOR AS A COACH IN The RELATIOnship SETTING
Partnering together can assist you in discovering the factors and behaviors that hinder your life, work, or relationships and contribute to stress, anxiety, and dysfunctional patterns. Together we can chart a path to think, feel, and choose differently, and create accountability to achieve all your goals and dreams!
A Los Angeles native, Dr. Heidi Summers, has spent her career caring for the souls and relationships of others. She is double board certified as a Christian Counselor and Master Coach, and is additionally an ordained minister. These vocational distinctives help her embrace her passion to help others experience well-being, transformation, and flourish.
She earned a doctorate from Fuller Theological Seminary researching the intersection of Interpersonal Neurobiology and transformation (Romans 12:1,2 ). She is fortunate to have studied with the notable cognitive neuroscientist Dr. Caroline Leaf in her masters program, and the pioneer of Interpersonal Neurobiology Dr. Daniel J. Siegel while in her masters and doctoral programs. A curious and perpetual student, she further continued studies on the mind/brain connection at Johns Hopkins University with a capstone project on trauma interventions, and then further continuing education at the University of Oxford. Motivated by an ongoing deep desire to see others heal and thrive, she currently studies at Regent University, pursuing a second doctorate in Counseling Psychology focused in psychotraumatology (and has promised her family this will be the capstone to her formal academic adventures…).
She is fortunate to have completed intensive workshop trainings with Dr. John Townsend and Dr. Henry Cloud, and received training from relationship experts Milan and Kay Yerkovich in working with couples using Attachment Theory. She was also trained by the Gottman Institute in Gottman Method Couples Therapy. Additionally, she is a Dr. Daniel Amen Licensed Brain Health Trainer. She is certified to administer Psychological First Aid (PFA) and to administer psychological recovery tools (SPR) in crisis or disasters. She has been greatly influenced by and holds deep respect for Dr. David Augsburger and the late Dr. Arch Hart. In a word, she just feels fortunate.
In addition to private practice, she is with the New Life Live! referral network and serves as a speaker and facilitator at their workshops and intensives (winner of the 2023 Radio Program of the Year Award from NRB). Grateful for the experience, she transitioned away from Fuller Theological Seminary, where she spent a significant amount of time and heart on staff over two different departments and decades, to join the Psychology and Counseling Department at Regent University. She has also served on various boards, including advisory boards of several Christian universities.
Heidi is a wife, mother of three sons, and is grateful for their wives whom she considers as her three bonus daughters, and is Oma to the world’s most adorable granddaughters. She is also an avid athlete, musician, coffee-aholic, Peloton addict and admits to buying more books than she reads. She is always ready to climb any mountain and follow every dream.
